Welcome

Orkney is home to a number of church gatherings; from the north isles to the south isles and the mainland in between, we are united together by our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and look to follow it’s authority regarding matters of faith and practice.

All visitors are warmly welcome! Whether you live in Orkney or are just visiting, whether you believe or have questions, we welcome you to come along! If you’re interested in finding out what to expect at our meetings, just click here!

What is the Gospel?

The word 'gospel' means 'good news'. In particular, it is the news of Jesus Christ and how He has accomplished salvation for a doomed mankind. More broadly speaking, the gospel is the overall message conveyed in the Bible, which Christians believe to be the word of God.

the Bad News

Humankind is inherently sinful and everyone is guilty of sin. Of course, this doesn't mean we're incapable of being kind or doing what is noble, but since we have sinned we are tainted by imperfection and have fallen short of righteousness.

...we are therefore not worthy of Heaven (God's holy dwelling place and the realm of life and light). In order for us to go to Heaven, sin must somehow be removed or accounted for.

Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.

Ecclesiastes 7:20

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Romans
3:23

All of us have become like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags...

Isaiah
64:6

Good News

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

2 Corinthians
5:21

The good news is that God loves the world so much that He provides a way of salvation, through His son Jesus Christ. Having lived a sinless life, Jesus was crucified and paid the penalty of sin in our place.

He then rose from the grave, conquering death itself and demonstrating that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for mankind's sin. This gift of salvation is received by anyone who, turning in repentance to God, places their faith in Christ.

I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus

Acts
20:21

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians
2:8-9

The above is a brief summary of the core message of Christianity.

Contrary to traditional opinion, the church is not a community of pure and perfect people. We are a group of ordinary folk from Orkney and beyond who have placed our faith in Jesus.
